A New Sandbar in our Neighborhood
Alert resident Bryan Forrester brought it to our attention that a new sandbar has formed about a quarter mile northwest of Whitney Beach.
Sandbars in the Longboat Key area are known to shift, disappear or reappear due to tides, storms and dredging. The hurricanes Helene and Milton have redistributed a lot of sand, making changes in sandbars likely. The location of this sandbar is particularly prone to sandbar formation, due to the strong currents in Longboat Pass.
Who knows whether this sandbar is one of the hundreds of ephemeral here-today-gone tomorrow sandbars in Florida, or whether it will be a permanent part of our gulf, and eventually have a name?
Stay tuned!
